As I'm sure you all know, the SSA list of top baby names for 2008 was just released today.
We can welcome the Scottish Callum and Isla and the "hipster" Matilda to the ranks. What other names have you found that have just made their U.S. debut (or have appeared again for the first time in many years)?
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/Top Baby Names of 2008...have you found any newcomers?
Gemma! I'm both happy and sad to see her there -- she made her US debut at #888 -- moderately high for a newcomer, so I'm guessing she has promise. Of course, she's been popular in England for quite a while and as the British toppers catch on here eventually, it was only a matter of when it would happen. With her similarity to Emma and Ava, I was rather anticipating it.
Chloe's appearance in the top 10 surprised me, though. What came as a bigger surprise, however, was that Khloe jumped from #665 in 2007 to #196 this year -- a huge leap. I suppose that with the -K trend, it was to be expected, but I'm surprised all the same.
Nola was another that I didn't expect to see -- she charted for the first time in over 40 years; I'm so glad!
Something else I found interesting was that Marley seemed to have a huge presence this year; Marley itself jumped to #146 from #389 -- a jump of over two hundred places, but in addition; Mareli, Marely, Marlee, Marlene, and Marlie all charted (Marlie for the first time). Marley is new on the boys' side as well. Similarly, Karlee, Karley, Karlie, and Karly all charted; Karly returning to the list after two years. Not my favorite trend, but certainly a notable one.
Although she's never been off the charts (so this is completely unrelated), my beloved Charlotte jumped 25 places and made it into the top 100 for the first time since 1952. I'm a bit sad, actually!
I noticed that Cullen made the list at rank 781, which I automatically attributed to the "Twilight" book and movie series. But what's interesting is it's been on the list since 1999, and the book wasn't published until 2005. Obviously, my assumption was incorrect. And actually, Cullen has sunk in popularity since it's first appearance, going from 565th in 1999 to 767th in 2007, and now to 781. Let's see what happens to Cullen in 2009.
Making their first appearances at the very bottom were Sloane (f) at 999th, Kenley (f) at 998th, and Baron (m) at 991st. One of my good college friends had a baby in 2008 and named her Kenley.
I always find the female "Ash" names interesting, so just for the heck of it, here are the rankings of the female Ash names in the Top 1000 for 2008:
18th - Ashley
153rd - Ashlyn
282nd - Ashlynn
535th - Ashlee
838th - Ashly
927th - Ashleigh
975th - Ashtyn
Interesting, as I know more Ashleighs than Ashlys.Top Baby Names of 2008...have you found any newcomers?

Genesis, a name I'm not hugely fond of jumped from 138 to 95, it is a female name.
Miley has went from 279 to 127! I don't think that is a good idea to name your kid after a Disney channel star.
Marley went from 389 to 146, probably due to the movie Marley and me, I'm guessing.
London hopped from 284 to 156.
Piper, 240 to 176.
